Location: (71°20"S, 68°17"W) The Fossil Bluff Base is located at the foot of a scree covered ridge.

History

The Fossil Bluff Base was occupied during the winters of 1961, 1962, and 1969, through to 1975. After that, only summer occupation was allowed.

Science

Fossil Bluff is a forward facility for refueling aircraft, and is operated by the Rothera Base during the Antarctic summer season (October to March). There is a 1200m unprepared snow runway marked by drums, 1km south of the station. The station is about 90 minutes flying time from Rothera.

Other Information

Fossil Bluff houses four people in comfort, and forms a movable station for summer field parties.
