History
King Edward Point was occupied from 1 January 1950 to 1 January 1952, and then from 13 November 1969 to 3 April 1982. It was reoccupied only this year, on 22 March (2001).
Science
Main activities done at this base, were biology, meteorology, geophysics and glaciology (1950-1982). Today, the main activity is fishing. Fishing activity around South Georgia is regulated by internationally adopted measures. There are also investigations at King Edward Point – analysis of specimens is the most frequent one.
Other Information
The purpose built research station at King Edward Point is comprised of two single storey buildings, the James Cook Laboratory and Everson House. The James Cook Laboratory building has three separate laboratories, a refrigerated rough/wet laboratory, dry laboratory and an analytical laboratory. There is also a communications room, offices with excellent computing facilities, a walk-in freezer and a library. The Everson House provides living quarters for all staff, and during the summer months it provides comfortable accommodation for up to 18 people.
