History

The Rothera base was set up in 1975 to replace the Adelaide base where the skiway had changed. Using the gravel runway 1991 to 1992, air operations became more reliable and the access to Rothera was improved a lot through a direct airlink from the Falkland Islands.

Science

Scientific programs done at this base are biology, geoscience, glaciology, and atmospheric sciences.

Weather

Other Information

The station has a 900 meter crushed rock runway, with bulk fuel storage facility, and a jetty for the discharge of cargo from supply ships. Each summer, there is a small population of scientists and support staff who reach the base by air.
