Balleny Islands
English whaling captains John Balleny and Thomas Freeman were the first people to visit the islands. Freeman stepped ashore on 9 February 1839 - this landing was the first landing ever south of the Antarctic Circle. The Ballenys consist of the Ross Dependency, Young, Row, Borradaile, Buckle, Sabrina, Monolith and Sturge Islands - together, they stretch 195 km north to south. Brown Peak, the highest point (1524 m), is on Sturge Island, and has never been climbed. No landings can be made on Sabrina Island without special permission, due to its isolated state. About 500 Adélies nest on the islands, as well as the chinstrap and macaroni penguin.
