Peter I Øy

Norway

On 21 January 1821, Fabian von Bellingshausen discovered the island, naming it after the Russian Czar Peter the Great. It was the first land ever discovered south of the Antarctic Circle. Ola Olstad, sailing in his ship "Norvegia", made the first successful landing on 2 February 1929, claiming Peter I Øy for Norway. The island measures 158 sq km in size, and is 95% glaciated. Lars Christensen Peak, the island’s highest point, rises up to 1,755 m, and is also an extinct volcano.
