The Snares

New Zealand

The islands were discovered independently on 23 November 1791 by two different people: George Vancouver and Lieutenant Broughton. Broughton named them the Knight's Islands, but Vancouver named them the Snares. The Snares consist of the Western Chain (Rima, Wha, Toru, Rua and Tahi), Northeast Island, Alert Stack, Broughton Island and Daption Rocks. Millions of seabirds breed on the islands - 3 million pairs of sooty shearwaters shelter in burrows. The Snares crested penguin breeds here and nowhere else in the world.
