Belgica found off Norwegian coast
Belgian radio is reporting that Adriaen de Gerlache's famous ship the Belgica has been found off the coast of Norway near Harstad where she sank after an attack in 1940.
Belgium's Adrien de Gerlache captained the Belgica, famous as the home of the first people to overwinter in Antarctica after she became stuck in Antarctic ice. On board were many famous explorers who later went on to great deeds including Roald Amundsen first man to the South Pole.
The ship sank in 1940 after being attached off the coast of Norway, and a group of scientists believe they have found her (even though in pieces) near the city of Harstad. Her current condition is poor and the ships hull is disintegrating, making a recovery and return to a museum or port unlikely.
