Chilean Minister asks for back up to protect whales

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-02-25 09:57

Chilean Environment Minister Ana Lya Uriarte wants to protect the whales in Chile and believes that a permanent whale protection law should be set up. The Chileans have strong feelings about the whaling issue

In a statement she said "We are going to dictate a law to protect whales in Chile. We are working in different alternatives to protect whales against illicit fishing, and to also protect their habitats."

The plan is for the law to protect whales permanently, since the current law will only be in force until 2025 and does not protect the whales ecosystem.

She even asked the Chilean people to sign against whale hunting at the www.conama.cl web site and said their signatures would be sent to Japanese officials residing in Chile.
