Concern over plans to drill Lake Vostok

by admin last modified 2006-03-07 16:21

Concern has been expressed by US scientists over Russia's plans to drill into Lake Vostok and start investigating the lake, which has been trapped and sealed for millions of years.

Russia's intention to drill into Lake Vostok has raised concerns by US and international scientists due to fears that the method to be used may actually contaminate the lake thus rendering any results questionable.

Russia started drilling a hole in 1998, and has reached to within 100 yards from the ceiling of the lake. This plan is expected to be announced at the Antarctic Treaty members in Edinburgh, Scotland, in June.

Researchers hope to find out whether any living organisms are capable of living in such an environment as it could provide clues to possible life on the icy moons of Jupiter or on planets beyond our solar system.
