Follow your nose

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-03-14 14:40

French and US researchers have discovered that the Wandering Albatross finds their food by relying on their sense of smell. Their noses are really powerful tools, able to pick up a scent from several miles away.

Gabrielle Nevitt, professor of neurobiology, physiology and behavior at UC Davis said "This is the first time anyone has looked at the odor-tracking behavior of individual birds in the wild using remote techniques."

Their flying patters has suggested that the birds, rather than visual cues, were following a plume of scent. The birds do not have a very good eyesight compared to other predatory birds.

They fly for thousands of miles across the ocean, eating squid and other things.
