by Kris Molle last modified 2008-02-08 10:26

The Russian icebreaker Vasili Golovnin is supplying fuel to Argentina’s permanent base Marambio in the Antarctic Peninsula. It was contracted by the Argentine Government to support their Antarctic Season.

Argentina’s original Antarctic supply ship Almirante Irizar was badly damaged in the 2006/07 season and The Argentine Government turned to Russia for support.  It has also chartered a Russian helicopter that helps unload the fuel.

The next stop for the Russian icebreaker will be droppin supplies at the San Martin and Esperanza bases.

The Russian ship and helicopter are not the only means of supply the Argentine use, they still have various vessels and air support going to various bases and stations.
