New members might oppose IWC reform

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-03-04 00:01

A warning came from the organisation Greenpeace that there might be opposition from the new nations that are joining the International Whaling Commission. A meeting is set for next week.

Australia wants to present a plan that, according to Australia's Environment Minister Peter Garrett, will close the 'loophole' that allows Japan to kill whales for research.

However, Japan is lobbying new countries to join the IWC, hoping that they will take their side.  The countries would be Angola, Eritrea, Congo, Guinea, Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Palau, Micronesia, Cambodia and Laos.

Rob Nicoll from Greenpeace said these countries should be convinced to oppose whaling.  Otherwise it is unlikely that Australia's reform plans will succeed.
