Rare penguin spotted

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-03-03 01:24

It is often called a "freak of nature", these animals that lack pigmentation. The official name is "leucistic" and now an Adelie penguin which has this genetic defect has been spotted in Antarctica

Rhonda Wise, Australian Antarctic Division biologist has been able to take a picture of this rare bird near Mawson's Hut in Antarctica. She said: "On the island where we do our work we have 4,000 birds out there...and we've only ever seen one leucistic penguin at a time out there."

It is rare that an animal with this defect survived into adulthood as they normally fall prey to predators.
