by Kris Molle last modified 2008-02-12 15:37

Venezuela has never participated in an expedition to Antarctica before. In fact, they never has an Antarctica programme. But this might change in the future as the first Venezuelan team of scientists went on their first expeditions.

With the approval of President Hugo Chavez, a team of scientists, left yesterday on Venezuela's first expedition to Antarctica. The expedition they will participate in will take about 45 days.

The Science and Technology Minister Hector Navarro stated "The scientists will study various subjects including the effects of climate change on Antarctica.  What we hope is to be able to build a base ... a permanent Venezuelan scientific station on the Antarctic continent."
