Vostok

Nationality: Russian Location: (78°27'51"S 106°51'57"E) Completed: December 1957.

History

Built in 1957 (IGY) on an ice plateau, and named after one of the famous Russian explorer's (Bellinghausen) ships.

Science

The primary research activity has been ice core drilling. Vostok has achieved an ice core drill depth of 3650m, but have stopped drilling as they are less than 100m from the top of Lake Vostok.

Other Facts

The coldest temperature ever measured on earth has been measured at Vostok station. Vostok station is also above Lake Vostok.
